SODIUM REDUCTION & BALANCED MINERALS

Achieving Balance

Steps to achieve mineral balance

Recommended intake of

Salt – 5grams/1 teaspoon a day(Malaysian Dietary Guidelines 2010)

Step 1#: Trim the sodium

Many salt-free or reduced salt products are available in the market today.

Reduce high sodium food additives such as salt, brine, or other items that says sodium, such as monosodium glutamate.

✔ Check sodium content on products before buying.

When reading food labels, low sodium is defined as 140 mg of sodium per serving. Items with 400 mg or more of sodium are high in sodium.

Increase potassium and other mineral intake
Step 2#: Increase Intake of Potassium and other minerals

Bananas (Pisang Embun)

Potassium per 1 piece:

241mg (5.12% DV)

Carrots

Potassium per 1 cup

176mg (3.74% DV)

Sweet potato

Potassium per 1 whole

(medium)

698mg (14.8% DV)

Fish
(Spanish Mackerel)
Potassium per 1 slice: 361mg
(7.68% DV)

Spinach, Red
Potassium per 2 stalks: 278mg
(5.9% DV)

Lake Salt Light
Potassium per 1 teaspoon:
1156mg
(24.5% DV)

✔ Vegetables and fruits are natural sources of potassium. Consuming more fresh fruits and vegetables helps to balance out the sodium and potassium in the body.

% DV= % compared to Recommended Daily Volume of Potassium - 4700mg (Institute of Medicine, USA).

Step 3#: Consume mineral enriched salt.

Reducing sodium intake and increasing the consumption of potassium rich food would be a good way to balance the minerals in our body. However, it is still difficult to achieve the recommended daily amount of potassium just by relying on potassium rich food alone. Mineral-enriched salts like Lake Salt LIGHT can help by reducing 50% of sodium in one serving as well as give you the daily potassium your body needs.

Step 3#: Consume mineral enriched salt.

Besides potassium, Lake Salt LIGHT also contains magnesium and calcium. Magnesium also supports blood pressure by reducing vascular resistance in the blood vessels. It is more effective in reducing BP when administered in a natural form as a combination with potassium and calcium than when given alone.

(18) (Nutrition Journal. 02 Sept. 2011)

On the other hand calcium works in combination with potassium and magnesium to relax the blood vessel walls. This results in a lower blood pressure and risk of hypertension.s (19) (Journal of Clinical Hypertension, July 2008)
